Libretto

The libretto largely follows that of the ‘Cantarina-Intermezzo’ by the composer Niccolò Piccinnis (Naples 1760) and that of the composer Nicola Confortos (textbook edited by Domenico Macchia). Haydn took the ‘serious’ text of the Recitativo accompagnato Che mai far deggio and the aria Io sposar l’empio tiranno from the opera seria ‘Lucio Vero’ by the composer Apostolo Zeno of 1700. Haydn’s arrangement of the ‘Canterina material’ differs from his own text models essentially only through the use of the final quartet.3

Synopsis

Act 1
The young songstress Gasparina lives with her supposedly mother Apollonia in the house of the Kapellmeister Don Pelagio, who also gives her music lessons. While the two women are waiting for a lesson to begin, Gasparina’s suitor, Don Ettore, comes with a diamond ring and a piece of fine cloth, wishing to ingratiate himself with her. When Don Pelagio, who also has his eye on Gasparina, appears, Don Ettore is sent away without further ado. The music lesson begins with Don Pelagio’s recital: an aria he has just composed. As his pupil repeats the introductory recitative, Don Pelagio attempts to weave a marriage proposal into his instructions. Apollonia destroys this plan through multiple interruptions. At the end of the lesson, Gasparina soothes the jealousy of Don Ettore, who has been summoned again, with lies about her teacher, who, hiding under the harpsichord, overhears the scene. He comes out angry. The two admirers of the singer declare their solidarity with each other, and the women appear remorseful.

Act 2
Don Pelagio appears with his servants and an official. He demands the outstanding rent and wishes to chase the women out of the house. Gasparina begs for his sympathy so insistently that he finally withdraws all his threats. Touched by so much kindness, Gasparina supposedly faints, and only wakes up when Don Pelagio and Don Ettore show her a purse and a diamond ring instead of smelling salts. In the end, the women triumph and the men are reconciled.4
